Fat, skin, or posture — the three causes

A double chin is not one thing. Submental fat is a discrete pocket of subcutaneous fat that sits between the chin and the neck. Skin laxity is a loss of elasticity that lets tissue drop, common with age and after significant weight loss. Posture — a forward head position and a shortened neck line — makes both look worse in photos.

Treatment only works when it is matched to the cause. Freezing fat that is not there does nothing; strengthening posture will not remove a genuine fat pocket. The consultation exists to sort this out before you spend money.

How cryolipolysis treats the submental area

A smaller applicator sized for the chin cools the subcutaneous fat to the point of damage. The body then clears those cells metabolically over the following 2–6 weeks.
